Reflecting on My Internship Journey at The Confluence

This semester, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Nature At The Confluence, a community-centered organization dedicated to environmental education and engagement. It was more than just an internship; it was a transformative experience that shaped my perspective on community, sustainability, and personal growth.

From the beginning, I knew this placement would excitingly challenge me. While I had experience working with environmental initiatives back in Nepal, this role introduced me to new ways of engaging with a community. My responsibilities ranged from setting up for events and leading educational activities to working on hands-on projects with volunteers. Each task pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and helped me develop skills I didn’t know I needed.
One of the most memorable experiences was leading field trips for young children. My team and I designed interactive learning stations on topics like watersheds and hibernation. At first, I was nervous about presenting and ensuring the children stayed engaged, but I quickly adapted. By the end of the sessions, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. Seeing the students’ curiosity grow and knowing I had contributed to their learning was incredibly rewarding. It also taught me the importance of communication, patience, adaptability, and the power of stepping up in unfamiliar situations.
Another significant highlight was collaborating with volunteers during the weekly workdays. Together we tackled tasks like gardening, habitat maintenance, and event preparations. The dedication and resilience of the community members, especially the older volunteers, is inspiring. Their stories and unwavering commitment to giving back reminded me of the value of community service. It is not just about the work being done—it is about the connections formed and the collective impact we create.

Time management was another area where I experienced tremendous growth. Early in the semester, I often underestimated how long tasks would take and found myself rushing. With guidance from my supervisor, Julie, I learned the importance of planning ahead and being punctual. This small shift not only made me more organized but also reduced stress and improved my productivity. It is a habit I will carry forward in all aspects of my life.
Through this internship, I also gained a deeper understanding of the Beloit community. Events like the Community Fire & Drum Circle were a beautiful illustration of how shared spaces and traditions bring people together. Whether it was setting up for these gatherings or observing the joy they brought to participants, I saw firsthand how The Confluence serves as a hub for connection and learning. The kindness, inclusivity, and shared pride of the community were evident in every event.
Reflecting on my journey, I am amazed at how much I have grown—not just professionally, but personally. I have become more confident in my ability to communicate, lead, and adapt to new situations. I have also developed a stronger appreciation for community engagement and the power of collective effort. This experience has reaffirmed my passion for environmental sustainability and working with communities to create meaningful change.

It is more than just a place—it is a community that fosters learning, connection, and growth. I am incredibly grateful to have been part of its mission and to contribute in my own way.
